This prototype of a new generation of Russian Air Superiority Fighters is based in many parts on the proven Sukhoi SU-27. It appeared first in 1997 and caught the experts by surprise with its unusual shape. Characterized by its wings, which guarantee excellent manoeuvrability and engines which achieve super-sonic speed without afterburners, the aircraft is in its design stage. It is not yet certain, that the Berkut will enter service with the Russian Air Force.
